FLINT (WJRT) (10/16/17)--It's the big reveal of the renovated teen room at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint. Employees from Lowe's stores in Flint, Burton, and Saginaw completed the project last week.
"This has exceeded my expectations. This takes the club to a whole new level. We want to provide the kids with the best experience they can have. The best facility, the best resources," said club CEO Tauzarri Robinson.
The teen room's last makeover came more than ten years ago. This latest round included a major technology upgrade.
"We have charging stations for the phones and tablets, we have Wi-Fi, flat screen televisions, X-Box One, PS4, things like that," said Robinson.
While the teen room has only been back open for a few days, it's had plenty of visitors.
"It's been a short period of time, but we've already seen more teenagers coming into the club. They're really excited to be a part of the space," said Robinson.
All of this ties win with the club's biggest fundraising week of the year, which includes Wednesday's Suits and Sauce event at the Flint Farmers' Market. This year's Patrick McInnis Community Hero award will be presented to Randy Wise.
"We have our steel drum band kicking things off, it's all about building famous futures, and our kids are famous. They're the future. We'll have a red carpet," said Robinson.
Along with dinner is an elaborate silent auction.
"A Traverse City escape, a night at a bed and breakfast, wine tasting and helicopter ride package. We have as autographed basketball signed by Magic Johnson," said Robinson.
The Boys & Girls Club hopes to bring in at least 50 thousand dollars this week, money that'll provide club scholarships, field trips, and more.
"We want to be able to start next school year with a second facility. Running a second program, we piloted this program over on the south side the last two summers. It's been really successful. We want to raise enough dollars to be there permanently year-round," said Robinson.
