(5/15/2019) - Authorities ordered several evacuations and closed roads in the area of Dort Highway and Court Street in Flint due to a major gas leak.

The gas leak was reported near the BP gas station around 2:35 p.m. A 911 caller reported gas erupting from the ground with rocks flying out, according to Genesee County 911.

Consumers Energy crews were doing maintenance in the area when they hit a 6-inch gas line, causing the leak. The Flint police and fire departments were requested to help contain the situation.

The intersection of Dort Highway and Court Street was closed in all four directions while Consumers crews worked to clamp off the leak. They were trying to either place a clamp on the hole or squeeze off the pipe on both ends of the leak.

The gas rushing out of the leak was loud and caused a stir in the neighborhood.

"I was letting my dogs out and you know I thought it was construction or something going on and I walked down here and it looks like a waterfall going on back here," said Waor Gilbert. "And the hissing you can hear, so it's like Niagara Falls. I don't know what's going on."

Northbound Dort Highway traffic was being rerouted at Lapeer Road to the south and the exit ramps from I-69 to Dort Highway were being closed. Southbound Dort Highway was closed at Robert T. Longway Boulevard.

Authorities evacuated the gas stations, offices, strip malls and businesses in the area until Consumers Energy could shut off the flow of gas.

The road closures were expected to continue well into Wednesday evening while utility crews worked on repairing the leak. Barricades were brought in to keep traffic away from the scene.
