FLINT (WJRT) - (01/05/18) - It can't be said enough. It's so critical to check on seniors in this dangerously cold weather. One Genesee County organization is continuing to do their part by providing meals seniors rely on each day.
They start as early as 5 o'clock in the morning. The staff at Genesee County Community Action Resource Department (GCCARD) cook the food then distribute it as part of their Meals on Wheels program.
We caught up with Carolyn Blair at the senior nutrition kitchen as she was loading up the food in her car. She delivered 62 meals Friday.
"I get to talk to the senior citizens. I get to help them and I love helping people," Blair said.
GCCARD provides about 2,100 meals a day. That is not counting meals they provide at Genesee County senior centers.
The dangerously cold weather has had its effect on the organization. Some drivers just could not make it to work, but no senior goes without a meal. Blair told us why she does it.
"Because I know they would need their meals. I know some of them wouldn't have anything to eat and so I know I had to come to help them," Blair said.
Freddie Mitchell sure appreciates her work. Carolyn delivered to him first on Friday.
"They care about me and I care about them," she said. "I think they care more about me. They say, 'You're out in this weather' and I say, 'Yes. I had to bring your food.' I don't mind doing this."
If there are not enough drivers to make deliveries because of the weather conditions, GCCARD says all seniors have an emergency meal stored away that they replenish as it's used.
