Membership warehouse for nonprofit organizations set to open Monday in Flint

FLINT (WJRT) - (01/09/19) - Who doesn't love a discount? A first of its kind warehouse in Michigan will provide that and more.

The Mid-Michigan Resource Warehouse is similar to any Costco or Sam's Club. Shoppers come in, show their membership ID and start shopping.

The only difference is that the customers are nonprofit organizations. The store offers a wide variety of merchandise from coffee makers and infrared heaters to Keurig machines and oil fryers.

"Good 360 approached us to be able to see if we were even capable of doing something like this," said Catholic Charities Community Service Director John Manse. "They say it's been rolled out across the country in about 30 other warehouses and they're looking for a warehouse in Michigan."

Manse is working with retailers like Walmart to bring new discontinued or returned items to the warehouse on Stewart Avenue in Flint.

"Damaged boxes are a nonprofit's best friend because consumers don't want to pay for them," Manse said.

The discount for nonprofits here is 80 percent or more. For example, a Keurig coffee maker that's originally $120 was priced at $10.

Products come in their original boxes and volunteers sort through everything as it gets delivered. They price, label and test the items to make sure they are in good working order.

It's an expensive program to run each year. But with $100 memberships they plan on using the money to help with Catholic Charities' free programs offered to the community.

Annual memberships for nonprofits are discounted in January and February at 50 percent off.

"There will be others in Detroit and Grand Rapids as it grows, but right now we're the only ones in Michigan and we're the pilot program. And actually nonprofits can take advantage of that within 100 miles of Genesee County and come and shop and fill their pantries," Manse said.

The grand opening for the warehouse is happening Jan. 14. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There's a fundraiser '80s themed dinner show that'll take place on Jan. 19 at the Davison Country Club to raise money for the warehouse. Tickets are $35.
