CHESANING (WJRT) (12/31/2018) - The investigation continues after two pedestrians got hit by a pickup truck while checking on the driver involved in an earlier collision.
Late Friday afternoon, an elderly woman driving a Buick rear-ended a pickup truck on M-52 near M-57 in Saginaw County's Brady Township.
As the driver of the pickup and another man checked on the elderly woman in the Buick, another pickup truck hit the two men standing outside the car.
One of the men was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment of a compound leg fracture while the other was taken to an area hospital by ambulance. Police said both initially were listed in critical condition.
One man remains hospitalized in stable condition while the other has been released.
Investigators are still looking into how the accidents happened.
Saginaw County Sheriff Bill Federspiel offered motorists tips to avoid a similar crash in the future.
"Equipment must be maintained. We need to make sure all of our equipment -- always make sure your brakes lights, your tail lights, your hazard lights" are working, he said.
Federspiel added people should get out of the road as quickly as possible and move their vehicles out of traffic lanes if they are operable.
"If there are no injuries, get out of the roadway. If your vehicle can be driven, get it off that road, especially if it an M road or an interstate," he said. "Get it out of that lane of travel."
The woman driving the Buick wasn't hurt and investigators are still looking into who was at fault.
