UTICA (WJRT) (4/26/19) - A Detroit-area grandmother was taken advantage of by someone out of Virginia claiming to be an attorney.

The Richmond Police Department in Virginia sent out an alert about the scam. They say the 81-year-old woman from Utica sent nearly $10,000 in cash.

A scammer convinced the woman that her grandson was in a Tennessee jail near where he goes to college and needed her to pay the bond to get him released. The money was sent to an address in Richmond, Virginia.

Police were able to intercept the package in the mail just two hours before it was going to be delivered. The money was all there and will soon be returned to the grandmother.
