MICHIGAN (WJRT) - (01/26/17) - Michigan turned 180 years old on Thursday.

On this date in 1837, Michigan officially became a state. It was the twenty-sixth state to join the union.

Today, nearly 10 million people live here.

Tourism attracts thousands and thousands of visitors to great spots like Frankenmuth.

There are 11,000 lakes in the state, so you're never far from outdoor fun.

Eight Native American tribes were in Michigan when the first Europeans began to explore the area. It became noted for fur trading and later for lumber.

Starting in the early 1900s, Michigan was the center of the automobile industry and cities like Flint, Lansing and Detroit grew.

Because we touch four of the Great Lakes, we're surrounded by beauty. The Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes is a destination known throughout the world and we can point out where we live by showing you the palm of our hand.

But people are what make the state great. Tourists often remark how welcoming we are and willing to help.

We celebrated with a Made in Fenton birthday scone to celebrate this special day.

Happy birthday, Michigan!
