GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (04/20/17) - A Mid-Michigan jeweler received an honor Thursday that's almost unheard of.

Robert Gaines is being applauded for 70 years of service with the American Legion. He served in both World War II and the Korean War.

After the wars, he opened Gaines Jewelry to support his family in Genesee County, but at 90 years old, he's still concerned about other veterans and doing right by them.

“I get a paper every month what they're doing to veterans. It makes my heart sink to hear they aren't being treated good,” he said.

“Although the weather isn't good today, he brings sunshine with his service and support of veterans. God bless him,” said John Fischer, of American Legion Post 64.

Gaines tells us he has always been proud of his service, but boy was he glad to come home from the wars.
