Mid-Michigan woman shows how to make Kombucha from her home

FLINT (WJRT) (3/21/2019) - Kombucha could be the answer for anyone looking for a drink that can detox the body and give you more energy.

Experts say it has a lot of health benefits.

“It normally costs $2.50 to $4 a bottle and I can make six bottles for less than a $1,” Kimberly Warchol-Smith said.

She is a local entrepreneur who started making the drink six years ago. Warchol-Smith said Kombucha improved her gut health after having to take antibiotics.

"I wanted to regulate myself, so I started drinking Kombucha and I wanted to keep drinking it,” she said.

Warchol-Smith said the drink can be used for hair or skin, but drinking is the most common use.

"Increasing your gut bacteria and giving yourself like good acids and vitamins,” she said.

According to Warchol-Smith, here’s how someone can make it at home:

-- Boil water, add some tea and let it steap for 20 minutes.
-- Warm up a jar of water and add about one cup of sugar.
-- After the tea is brewed and it’s cooled to room temperature, add the water-sugar mixture to the tea.
-- Add a scoby to that mixture and top it off with more water. A scoby can be purchased at some grocery stores or from online retailers.
-- Seal the jar tight with a paper towel once the scoby is inside.
-- Place the sealed container in a dark corner.
-- The fermentation process can take anywhere from a week to a month.

The Kombucha 101 class will be at 3 p.m. May 18 at All Natural Healing Associates in Flint.
