Midland County stepping up efforts to combat mosquitoes

MIDLAND COUNTY (WJRT) - (07/12/17) - If you think the mosquitoes are worse this year - you're right - at least in Midland County.

The reason? Our recent flooding.

Monday, mosquito control started treating catch basins to help combat the pests. They have 13,000 basins to treat.

They are also putting in extra hours spraying in every corner of the county, and while mosquitoes can bug you, this year there's a health concern.

There have been crows with positive West Nile tests.

Mosquitoes lay eggs in areas that are prone to flooding and they can stay viable for years. Add some water and they hatch.

So the mosquitoes out now are likely the result of several years worth of egg-laying.
