SWARTZ CREEK (WJRT) - UPDATE: (09/08/16) - A Caracal missing from a home in the Swartz Creek area is safely back home.

Ameera is a 40 pound African caracal. Her owner, Riley Gibbs, got her around four years ago when she was just a kitten.

Gibbs was out looking for Ameera when his girlfriend called and said she spotted the cat in the backyard - dirty and scared.

They had to coax her into a shed before getting her back into the house.

Gibbs, says a screen door leading into the back porch of his home on Linden Road was mysteriously left open Wednesday night and that's how the cat got out.

Swartz Creek Community Schools issued a shelter in place for Morrish Elementary students on Thursday as a precaution.

Police were also made aware.

Gibbs understands why the staff at the elementary school kept the kids inside, although he says she'd likely only hiss at anyone that got too close.
