MOUNT PLEASANT (WJRT) (3/14/2019) - A 64-year-old Mount Pleasant man was sentenced to 74 years in prison on Thursday for sexually assaulting a girl over 15 months and impregnating her.

Byron Bird was convicted in U.S. District Court on two counts of sexually abusing a minor, two counts of abusive sexual contact, witness tampering, failure to register as a sex offender and eight counts of committing crimes as an unregistered sex offender.

Bird's conviction came in December for the crimes, which occurred between Oct. 27, 2016, and Jan. 13, 2018, on the Isabella Reservation.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Bird sexually abused a girl several times while she was under his care. She became pregnant with his child as a result of the abuse.

During the 15 months of abuse, Bird threatened to take things away from the victim if she ever told anyone about what he was doing.

Bird previously was convicted of sex crimes in Canada involving a victim under 14 years old in 2007.
