MT. MORRIS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (1/25/2019) - A Mt. Morris Township police officer is facing trouble after he allegedly left the scene of a car accident -- and possibly driving while intoxicated.
A Mt. Morris Township police officer is accused of crashing this truck into a tree while drunk and then leaving the scene.
The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. Friday on Shattuck Road near Michigan Avenue in Carrollton Township outside the city of Saginaw.
Police got to the scene of the accident, but there was no one inside the banged up pick-up truck.
A witness who did not want to be identified said he saw the male driver get out of the truck after the crash, walk around to the passenger side, grab something from inside and get in another vehicle traveling with him.
When police arrived at the crash scene, the driver was gone. Police were able to identify the owner of the pickup by checking the license plate. A short time after, the owner called 911 to report his vehicle stolen.
However, when Carrollton Township police questioned the owner of the pickup truck, the story about it getting stolen unraveled. Investigators confirm the driver of the pickup truck is a police officer and was arrested for operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.
Carrollton Township Police Chief Craig Oatten would not disclose what police department the man works for, but ABC12 News confirmed he is an officer with the Mt. Morris Township Police Department.
The officer was lodged in the Saginaw County Jail on Friday morning but was released pending toxicology reports. He could face additional charges once the complete report is sent to the Saginaw County Prosecutor's Office.
The officer involved was not identified because he has not been arraigned. Mt. Morris Township Police Chief Terence Green could not be reached for comment Friday.
