(WJRT) - (01/02/19) - The record-breaking Netflix film "Bird Box" has inspired a social media challenge that the online-streaming company is warning people to stay away from.

The movie is based on a novel by Ferndale, Michigan author Josh Malerman.

The characters are forced to wear blindfolds to avoid looking at mysterious creatures that are threatening to kill off the human race if eye-contact is made.

Some fans of the movie are giving it a try themselves, posting video of themselves walking around blindfolded outside.

It's all part of a trending challenge that Netflix is warning you NOT to take part in.

In a tweet, the company says in part, "We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes."

It seems as though it's something that goes without saying, but Netflix wants you to know the dangers before you regret something that could turn out to be quite dangerous.

The fictional film stars actress Sandra Bullock.
