SAGINAW (WJRT) (03/26/18) - Delta College is on the move. Monday, the college broke ground it's Saginaw campus.
Officials with the college and the city of Saginaw are very excited about this expansion. They believe it's another piece coming together in the rebuilding of downtown Saginaw and providing easy access to an education for residents.
"We're excited about that and being right here in this riverfront area because we see so much development now, and this is just another step of people who are interested in creating a new Saginaw," said Saginaw Mayor Dennis Browning.
The 35,000-square-foot three-story building located on East Genesee Avenue, will replace the former Delta site in Buena Vista Township at the old Ricker School.
On Monday, a groundbreaking ceremony officially kicked off construction of the $12.2 million project expected to serve more than 1,000 students -- many of whom live in the Saginaw area.
Delta President Jean Goodnow said studies found many of the students attending the Ricker School campus live within five miles of downtown Saginaw and lack access to transportation.
"This will be an ideal location for many of those students to take advantage of higher education through Delta," said Goodnow.
The building is expected to completed in June 2019 and open for classes for the 2019 fall semester.
