Local, elderly couple warns of 'Can you hear me?' phone scam
(02/03/17) - "Can you hear me now?" It's a phrase made famous by a commercial, but is now being used to steal your identity.
It happened to an elderly couple in Burton, who wants to get the word out to others so they don't get swindled.
"I might be old but I'm not dumb," said Evelyn Pennington.
For about a week, Pennington and her husband have been getting weird calls. Each time it's from a different number, but they always say the same thing.
"She will say, 'This is Allison from the warranty department. Can you hear me?'" Pennington said.
The thieves like so-called 'Allison' are hoping instead of hanging up, you say 'yes' so they can record it. They then use the recording to approve unauthorized charges on phone bills, utility bills and credit cards.
It might seem rude, but if you get a call and they ask 'Can you hear me?', Pennington has some advice.
"Hang up the phone and don't talk to them. I hang up on a lot of people I don't want to talk to," she said.
