1-year-old dies near Saginaw, man charged with murder, police say
(7/11/2019) - A man is facing a preliminary open murder charge after police in Saginaw County found a 1-year-old child is dead.
Carrollton Township police were called to the 2800 block of North Michigan Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday for a child in distress. Officers found the 1-year-old boy not breathing when they arrived.
Paramedics and first responders attempted resuscitation efforts, but the baby was pronounced dead.
Police believe the case possibly is a homicide. The 25-year-old man in the home, who is not the 1-year-old's biological father, has been arrested on a preliminary charge of open murder.
Police identified him as the boyfriend of the boy's mother.
Authorities took custody of two other children in the home, who are not biological children of the suspect, and gave them a full medical evaluation because they appeared to have injuries.
They were taken a secure location Thursday.
The children's mother was home when police arrived Wednesday. She was released from custody and allowed to stay with relatives while the investigation continues.
Investigators were scheduling an autopsy to determine how the baby died. They also planned extensive interviews with everyone involved Thursday to determine what happened Wednesday evening.
No formal charges have been filed against the suspect Thursday morning. He may face arraignment on the open murder charge in court on Friday.
The suspect's name will not be released until after arraignment.
Court records show the suspect was released from prison this spring after serving a three-year sentence for an attempted unarmed robbery case.
