BURTON (WJRT) - UPDATE: (03/03/17) - Fifty-one-year-old Derrick Boykin has been formally charged in the murder of a Beecher Schools employee.

Boykin pleaded not guilty Thursday morning in Genesee County District Court to one count of open murder and domestic assault in the death of his girlfriend, Kimberly Brown.

Police believe Boykin killed her in her Kings Lane Apartment over the weekend.

He will be back in court on March 23.

Brown worked in the lunch room at Beecher Schools for 25 years.

(02/28/17) - A long-time Beecher Schools employee was found dead inside of a Burton apartment Saturday morning.

Her death is being called 'suspicious.'

Burton Police tell ABC12 News they have zeroed in a person of interest possibly linked to the death of 47-year-old Kimberly Brown.

They're not ready to call this a murder investigation, however, detectives say evidence at the scene didn't match the story they were being told.

Then, the Genesee County medical examiner pointed to more clues that this could be murder.

The news is sending shock waves through Beecher Schools, where she worked for 25 years in food services.

"She always had a smile on her face, gave a hug, just a very jubilant person," said Beecher Schools Superintendent Dr. Josha Talison.

Social workers were brought in to help students and staff cope with the sudden death. They will have a moment of silence for Brown on Wednesday during lunch.
