(11/5/2019) - Mount Pleasant voters said no to a proposal from a citizen-based group to loosen restrictions on recreational marijuana in the city.

It was listed on the ballot as the Citizen Initiative Recreational Marihuana Establishments Ordinance.

City Commission approved an ordinance last month to allow and regulate recreational marijuana establishments.

Sales are still allowed in the city as they were prior to election day.

The state started accepting recreational marijuana business applications last Friday.

It is the latest step in the legalization process.

Once applications are approved, doors are expected to open for business sometime next year.
