Remembering Grand Blanc's McKenna Schummer
(03/07/18) - In the short time that we have known McKenna Schummer, it has been easy to fall in love with her infectious spirit. At just age 11, she left a beautiful mark on the world.
"They continue, you know, to I think carry a legacy that McKenna is going to leave, in their hearts and that is what gets them through," said family friend Sarah Hugo.
McKenna fought a ferocious battle with osteosarcoma for 20 months. She died Tuesday.
"If i was like wearing a shirt or someone else was wearing a McKenna Squad shirt, 'oh McKenna Squad, how's McKenna doing?' You know, everyone cared about McKenna. They had fundraisers and a big, huge birthday party for her. She loved the Spartans," Hugo said.
McKenna's favorite player, MSU's Miles Bridges, posted a touching message to Instagram. He dedicated the season to her and said he would never forget her. Coach Tom Izzo gave his condolences to the family as well.
While she will be missed, her presence will still be felt.
"McKenna had the idea of the Beauty Bar. So, they actually have a room at Detroit Children's Hospital that they are going to name McKenna's Beauty Bar," Hugo said.
McKenna had a love for makeup but mostly a love for helping other people. Hugo says given the deaths of two other students in recent weeks, it has been a very difficult time for the people of Grand Blanc.
The community has been rocked by tragedy lately and it's just amazing to me...it's amazing how many people come together in times like this," Hugo said.
In her office there are little reminders of McKenna everywhere and memories she will hold close to her heart.
"She honestly made me a better person, made me realize that...not to sweat the small stuff. Not to worry about the little things because they were just little things," Hugo said.
