Residents on dirt roads sliding on ice; road crews struggle to help

OAKLAND COUNTY (WJRT) (1/23/2019) - The up-and-down temperatures in Mid-Michigan and recent snowfall have created an especially challenging situation for residents on dirt roads.

The Road Commission for Oakland County shared two photos Wednesday of dirt roads encased in ice. Making matters worse, regular road commission trucks are unable to traverse the roadways.

The situation isn't much better farther north in Genesee County. The Genesee County 911 Communications Center reported four vehicles got stuck on North Henderson Road between Richfield and Coldwater roads in Richfield Township.

The Genesee County Road Commission said its trucks were having trouble driving on dirt roads throughout the day.

Oakland County has 760 miles of gravel roads and the road commission says residents along nearly all of the roads have called to complain about the icy conditions.

The road commission has deployed its fleet of 19 graders equipped with tire chains to reopen the roads enough so plow trucks can safely drive on them to drop a sand and chloride mix that should help melt the ice.
