Saginaw Spirit advance to conference finals for first time in franchise history
(4/15/2019) - The Saginaw Spirit are on their way to the Western Conference Finals of the Ontario Hockey League for the first time in franchise history.
The Spirit knocked off Sault Ste. Marie on Sunday to win their second round series 4-2 games. Team president and managing partner Craig Goslin has been with the Spirit from the start.
"Putting smiles on the faces of the people that have supported us through the years makes our heart sing," he said. "That's what I am happiest about is the people that have supported us for 17 years, including our staff in the community. "It's been a labor of love between our community and the Saginaw Spirit. We are grateful and we love them back."
Tickets for the next playoff round are on sale, but fans won't know until Tuesday night when the games will be played. Goslin is hoping once the dates are set, the tickets will start selling.
"When you see the Dow Event Center full of people and our fans the way they respond, it makes our players jump up to a whole new level," he said.
Getting to the third round has been the team's biggest achievement, but Goslin is hoping it won't be the last milestone this year.
"The third round is exciting," he said. "We want to get to the fourth round. It takes 16 games to get to the Memorial Cup. We got eight -- eight down, eight to go, and the fans are a big part of that."
The Spirit will have to wait another day to find out who they face in the conference finals. London and Guelph meet Tuesday night for game seven of their series.
If Guelph wins, game one of the next round will be in Saginaw on Thursday night. If London wins, that series would start in London with game three Monday night in Saginaw.
