SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) UPDATE: Police arrested the Saginaw Township police shooting suspect in Shiawassee County after a shootout

Police block Woodbury Road in Shiawassee County after a shootout led to the arrest of Joshua Rosebush, who is suspected of shooting a Saginaw Township police officer early Tuesday.

(1/22/2019) - The Saginaw Township police officer shot in the face early Tuesday morning remained in critical but stable condition hours later.

Police say Officer Jeff Koenig, a 16-year veteran of the Saginaw Township Police Department, was shot in the face and right arm during a traffic stop around 2:15 a.m.

The shooting took place on Tittabawassee Road near Bay Road in Saginaw County's Kochville Township. Police believe 29-year-old Joshua Rosebush is responsible for the shooting.

After the shooting, Koenig was able to operate his radio and call for help. His description of the vehicle as he lay bleeding got police hot on the trail of the suspect.

Koenig relayed a description of the suspect and his white Dodge pickup truck despite a gunshot wound to his jaw. He even told responding officers the truck was last seen speeding through the nearby Cabela's parking lot.

Other officers loaded him into a patrol car and rushed him to a Saginaw hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Koenig later was airlifted to University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor for further treatment.

The pickup truck that Koenig described was found several hours later in a wooded area off Liberty Road in Kochville Township, just a couple of miles from the shooting scene.

Police believe Rosebush then stole a Ford pickup truck with AIS Construction Equipment decals on the side from the St. Charles area and drove it to the Home Depot on Corunna Road in Flint Township.

He later stole a white 2006 Ford van from the Speedway gas station on Bristol Road at I-475. A Shiawassee County sheriff detective spotted the van around 1 p.m. heading west on I-69.

Rosebush allegedly pulled out a gun while the detective was following him and waiting for backup to arrive. The detective opened fire and Rosebush was injured before he was taken into custody.

He was arrested near the intersection of Woodbury and Lansing roads. Rosebush was hospitalized for his injuries while the detective did not report serious injuries.
