School Spirit Challenge continues for 2018-2019 with some changes

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) (9/14/2018) - For more than a decade, the ABC12 School Spirit Challenge has been helping to support the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

That tradition is continuing with some additions.

This school year, we are going into the classrooms to give you a behind-the-scenes look at how the students are working hard all year long to do great things in their schools and their communities.

Over the past decade, students across Mid-Michigan have proven they care about their communities by participating in the School Spirit Challenge. They've taken part in some wild scenes on Friday mornings.

But this year, we're changing it up.

We know that these schools are amazing on Friday mornings, but we want our viewers to know just how amazing they are all year long by showcasing specific school programs.

"I get to go on Friday mornings and see how excited they are, hear about the fantastic things they're doing in their schools," said Cathy Blankenship. "But really it's about neighbor helping neighbor. When kids learn that type of empathy as a young person, think how wonderful of adults they're going to be when they grow up and they're actually the leaders in their community."

In addition to the fun Friday mornings, we will be spending a whole day in the school early in the week to learn about why the students are special. Then, we'll present some heartwarming stories on along with the fun on Fridays.
