Sewage tainted soil accidentally dumped on I-75 in Grand Blanc Township

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (2/15/2018) - One lane of I-75 in Grand Blanc Township is closed while crews clean up contaminated soil accidentally dumped on the freeway.

A gravel truck traveling northbound near Saginaw Road dumped a quarter-inch layer of mud mostly in the right lane around 11 a.m. The dirt came from a sewage spill.

First responders closed the right two lanes of I-75 from the Oakland-Genesee county line about three miles north into Grand Blanc Township while a clean up crew collects the contaminated soil from the freeway.

Because the soil is contaminated, crews are limited in how they handle it. The dirt has to be picked up directly off the pavement and cannot be pushed off the road, so the contamination doesn't spread.

A crew from Corrigan Environmental was leading the cleanup efforts. The lanes remained closed through the evening rush hour, causing a traffic back up several miles long to the Holly Road interchange.
