Stained instruments lead Owosso hospital to cancel elective, scheduled surgeries

OWOSSO (WJRT) (11/8/2018) - Memorial Healthcare in Owosso is canceling elective and scheduled surgeries due to a problem with instruments getting stained.

The hospital believes the issue is related to using hard water and detergents on the stainless steel surgical equipment in the cleaning process, according to a statement the hospital's website.

However, the issue did not affect patient safety or the sterility of the surgical supplies. Hospital officials just want to determine what is causing problem before moving forward with more operations.

"When a question exists about quality or safety, we always error on the side of caution," the statement says.

The hospital's quality and safety teams are working with outside experts "around the clock" to resolve the issue. Memorial Healthcare is rescheduling elective and scheduled surgeries that were canceled as a result of the problem.

"Memorial Healthcare will continue to work with patients on an individual basis to determine how to best address any and all issues related to their surgical experience," the statement says.

Anyone scheduled for surgery at the hospital who hasn't been contacted yet should call 989-729-4960 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
