State Trooper exchanges gunfire, is shot, during traffic stop

LAKE TOWNSHIP (WJRT)- (07/15/18) Houghton Lake State State Trooper exchanges gunfire with a gunman during traffic stop, suffering a gunshot wound during the exchange.

The unidentified Trooper was been released from the hospital after being treated for non-life-threatening gunshot injuries.

Police have identified the gunman as 32-year-old Douglas Robert Sawyer of Fenton.

According to MSP, Sawyer was positively identified after an autopsy over the weekend.

The man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after exchanging gunfire with the trooper.

At the time of the shooting, there were 3 warrants out for his arrest.

One was a Parole Absconder warrant resulting from his failure to comply with parole after a prison sentence for Home Invasion.

The second was a felony warrant for Criminal Sexual Assault 4th Degree out of the Michigan State Police Paw Paw Post.

The third was a civil warrant for child neglect.

This is an ongoing investigation.
