MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) (4/15/2019) - A recent study released Monday shows drivers in the city of Flint and Beecher pay the highest auto insurance rates in Mid-Michigan.
The good news, according to insurance research firm The Zebra, is rates for the Flint area actually declined 7 percent from 2018 to 2019.
Drivers who live in the 48502 zip code, which encompasses most of downtown Flint, paid the highest rates last year at $3,907. The remaining Flint and Beecher zip codes made up the eight highest rates in Mid-Michigan.
The 48437 zip code in Genesee and 48601 zip code in Bridgeport rounded out the top 10 at $3,167 and $2,892, respectively.
Michigan drivers pay the highest auto insurance rates in the country and the Metro Detroit area pays the highest average rate in the state at $3,532. The average rate for drivers from the Flint, Saginaw and Bay City metro area is $2,762, which is higher than the state average of $2,692.
"While Michigan's costly rates reflect the large amount medical coverage drivers are required to buy, insured Michigan drivers are additionally paying for the high number of uninsured drivers in the state,” said Alyssa Connolly, the director of market insights for The Zebra.
The lowest auto insurance rate in the Flint, Saginaw and Bay City metro area was $2,273 for drivers who live in the 48623 zip code in Freeland. The 48706 zip code in Bay City was next lowest at $2,297.
The Zebra’s national study explored 61 million car insurance premiums across every zip code in the United States, including all 47 zip codes in the Flint, Saginaw and Bay City metro area.
