SWARTZ CREEK (WJRT) (6/21/2018) - Swartz Creek High School graduates will walk across a different stage in a new venue beginning next spring.
After parent and student input, school administrators decided to have graduation at the Frankenmuth Credit Union Event Center in Birch Run. Next year's commencement ceremony will be on June 9.
The move comes after a controversial graduation ceremony at The Whiting in Flint, during which some parents weren't allowed into the main auditorium to watch their children graduate.
Families attending graduation received a limited number of two types of tickets: White to get in the main auditorium with the graduates and red to get into an overflow area with a live video feed.
Many people claimed school administrators and Whiting staff members weren't properly checking tickets at the doors, so people with red tickets or no tickets got in the main auditorium.
The main auditorium filled to capacity before all immediate family members were seated.
Swartz Creek Community Schools Superintendent Ben Mainka said the move from The Whiting to Birch Run was based on four factors: seating availability, professionalism, price and available date.
