(01/08/19) - A Sanilac County teen was hospitalized after shooting himself in the stomach with a makeshift gun.

The Sanilac County Sheriff's Office says the 911 call came in mid-afternoon on Monday from a home on Leslie Road in Evergreen Township.

The initial investigation revealed the 18-year-old was building a .22-caliber gun and forgot it was loaded. Two people were with him at the time and called 911 right away.

The teen was taken to Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw, where his condition was not known Tuesday.

The incident is believed to be accidental, but remains under investigation. The young man's name is not being released at this time.
