Teens, young adults wanted for Saginaw Fire Explorer program

SAGINAW (WJRT) - (11/08/17) - The Saginaw Fire Department is looking for a few good young men and women.

On Nov. 18 at 12 p.m. the department will host the first of many meetings for the Explorer program.

The 14-20 year olds will learn the basics of all aspects of firefighting including fire surpression, emergency medical services, water rescue and much more.

Fire Chief Chris Van Loo hopes the program will inspire the teens and young adults to enter the firefighter profession at a time when jobs are tough to fill.

In Saginaw County over the last 10 years, the number of firefighters has dropped by about 50%, according to Van Loo.

The Explorer program is affiliated with the Boy Scouts but is operated by the fire department.
