Turning water bottles from Flint into clothing

FLINT (WJRT) - (10/30/17) - The project Flint Fit has officially launched.

The artist behind it, Mel Chin, explained how it works.

He said they're collecting empty water bottles from people in Flint. The bottles will be shipped to the Unifi Corp. factory in Greensboro, N.C. There, the water bottles will be turned into fabric.

Then, a fashion designer in New York City is creating patters for eight different designs. Women at the N.E.W. Life Center in Flint will sew those patterns together.

Right now, this is just a pilot program.

Chin has visited Flint several times for a separate project and said speaking with the people across the city inspired him to come up with this idea.

He wanted to create a hopeful project and create a commentary on the water emergency. So, the clothing they're creating is rain gear and swim wear.

It will be displayed in a fashion show in New York and one in Flint

If it works out well, Chin says this will grow into an even bigger project.
