BRIDGEPORT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (2/25/20) - First responders say a mother and her baby were killed Tuesday morning in a fire at the Bridgeport Mobile Home Park off Dixie Highway in Bridgeport Township.
Firefighters say the call came in just after 6:30 a.m. Bridgeport Township Fire Chief Dave Smigiel lives about a mile away from the scene and he saw a plume of smoke as he was leaving his house.
Flames were shooting out of the mobile home when firefighters arrived. Saginaw County dispatchers indicated the mother and infant may be trapped inside and firefighters found their bodies a short time later.
Smigiel said investigators are working to confirm whether the fire is their only cause of death and whether the mobile home had working smoke detectors.
"Even with trailer homes, when they don't appear to be that large, you still need that extra warning to wake you up and get you out, because some of these trailers don't have even one good way out and it could be on the opposite end of the trailer," Smigiel said. "So smoke detectors are important no matter what kind of home you live in."
Two other mobile homes near the fire also received significant damage, but nobody else reported any injuries.
The Michigan State Police Fire Investigations Unit will be handling the investigation going forward. Authorities did not release names of the mother and her child or what may have sparked the fire.
