Uptown Bay City welcomes 2 new upscale restaurants

BAY CITY (WJRT) (11/8/2018) - New restaurants are opening in Bay City inside the Uptown Bay City development project.

The openings are taking place as construction continues on another building on the property.

Uptown Bay City sits on 35 acres along the Saginaw River on the city's east side. There are condos and lofts while businesses like Dow and Michigan Sugar have offices, along with shops, a hotel and now two restaurants.

"There is so much happening here now in Uptown," said Diane Fong of the Bay Area Community Foundation. "With the opening of this restaurant, Sushi Remix, there are all kinds of new shops in this gallery that will open here tonight as well."

Sushi Remix opened Thursday. Costela Brazilian Steak House is opening on Saturday, but it hosted a fundraiser Thursday.

"It's been a dream for 15 years," said owner Jose Costilla.

The fundraiser is for the Bay Area Community Foundation's scholarship program.

"It offers first generation college students $2,000 to go to Saginaw Valley State University or Delta College, so we have invested over $2 million in 1,000 students over our last 10 years," Fong said.

Uptown Bay City is also expanding, with construction continuing on another building that will feature 30 apartments and commercial space. Costilla said he had to be convinced Uptown was the right location for his new restaurant.

"At first, I never thought of opening here," he said. "It's kind of hidden. I wonder, are customers going to find me?"

With the public opening just days away, he's happy with his decision.

"Now the finished product, I think this is the best place to be at and be part of this Uptown," he said. "They proved me wrong, so that's good."
