It’s a heartbreaking choice no parent should ever face. Do I keep the utilities on? Pay for food or rent? Or buy diapers for my baby?
Right now, 1 in 3 families in our community is struggling with that very question. With 4,500 children in our community living in poverty, many families can’t afford diapers and few resources exist to help them.
Because state and federal assistance cannot be used to buy diapers, many of these children are forced to stay in diapers for days at a time, increasing the risk of diaper rash, infections, neglect and even child abuse.
You can make a life-changing difference during the annual ABC12 Diaper Drive at ELGA Credit Union. Every penny raised goes to The Flint Diaper Bank, a nonprofit founded by Flint businessman Phil Shaltz and ABC12's Angie Hendershot.
Each dollar that is donated will buy eight diapers at cost to help families in the Flint area. Diapers are also being collected for distribution.
