Flint's Sarvis Center expected to be torn down

FLINT (WJRT) - (03/21/16) - The Flint Cultural Center is preparing to tear down the Sarvis Center.

The building, which is off Kearsley Street, currently has a fence surrounding the building as the facility undergoes an environmental abatement process.

Officials plan to demolish the building by early May.

Leaders with the Flint Cultural Center says they do not have the means to carry on the overhead cost to keep the facility up.

For several years, the Sarvis Center served as a meeting place for several community events, mainly for Flint Schools, before it was given to the Flint Cultural Center.

Officials are considering turning the area into green space and using it as a grand entrance into the cultural center, visible from Robert T. Longway Blvd, but are still considering their options.
