Michigan family creates dating website for people with special needs

MICHIGAN (WJRT) - (09/18/15) - A new and unique dating website will launch next month to help special needs adults find people to connect with.

It's called MySpecialMatch.com. It was created by a Michigan couple inspired by their special needs daughter. Their daughter suffered a traumatic brain injury when she was two and a half years old. From that time forward, their life became about her happiness.

"Life was difficult for Amanda, as she was permanently disabled both mentally and physically as a result of her injury. We realized that this life was our new normal and we decided to meet the challenge head-on," Steve and Shannon Harwood write in a news release.

As Amanda grew older, she met many new challenges. She did develop friends over the years to help her through the difficult times, but it soon became evident that her friends were passing her by and moving on to the next stages of their lives.

The Harwoods realized special needs children have support through various charities and community groups, but what happens when they become adults?

"We wanted to do something that would allow our daughter and everyone like her the opportunity to interact with others and give each and every one of them the chance to find that special someone," the Harwoods write. "MySpecialMatch.com is that something. Our hope is that all adults with special needs can utilize this website to reach out to those with similar interests and dreams and forge some long and meaningful relationships. We hope that we can make a difference in all of their lives."

MySpecialMatch.com is accepting people to register, but it does not officially launch until October. To register or learn more, click the link in the 'Related Links' section of this story.
