Dakota Rico's family reacts to arrest of man in connection with loved one's murder

SAGINAW, Mich. (WJRT) - A family finally gets the call they thought they would never get as an arrest has been in more than six year old Saginaw murder case.

A 25-year-old man is in custody in connection with the shooting death of Dakota Rico in September of 2015. Rico's family has been seeking answers on who killed him and why, and they are getting closer to finding out.

It's safe to say their asking the media to keep this story alive and keeping in touch with investigators helped put a suspect behind bars.

"I accepted the fact that this will not get solved," said Sue Rico, who is Dakota's mother.

So when she got a phone call from a Michigan State Police investigator on Saturday, telling her that an arrest has been in connection with the shooting death of her son, she was surprised.

"I was ecstatic actually," she said.

Dakota's body was found in a pickup truck near the intersection of Douglass and Youmans streets in Saginaw at around 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 2, 2015. It is believed he had just left work and was planning to see his girlfriend.

"A nightmare, it's a living nightmare," said Sue Rico describing the last six-plus years.

She and Dakota's brother Ryan lived the nightmare by keeping Dakota's story alive.

"Think of who to get a hold of to do another story, I collected candles and I run off pictures to laminate on the candles to have another vigil," Sue said.

"I got to the point in my life where I just kind of prepared to never have resolution to it and accepted that we might never get answers, and was moving forward, and when I got the call, I just broke down," Ryan Boshaw said.

Police are releasing few details about the arrest of the man, who had been a person of interest in the investigation.

When Dakota died, his daughter was just four months old. She will celebrate her seventh birthday in May.

"All she knows is that her Daddy is her angel," says Rico.

After his arrest, the suspect got into an altercation with another inmate at the Saginaw County Jail and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He had not been arraigned by Tuesday evening.
