BURTON, Mich. (WJRT) - A former Burton police officer is accused of embezzlement for allegedly submitting timecards for work he didn't do.

Wayne Newman is being charged with one felony count of embezzlement as an agent or trustee between $1 and $20,000. He turned himself in on Monday and a not guilty plea was submitted on his behalf.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said Newman was an officer with the Burton Police Department at the time of the allegations. An internal investigation by the department alleged that he claimed to be working when he was not.

If convicted, Newman faces up to five years in prison and restitution for the money he obtained unlawfully.
