GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - Hospitals across the country are seeing nurses leave their jobs looking for other opportunities with better hours, better pay and less stress.
According to the 2021 National Health Care Retention and RN Staffing report, the nurse vacancy rate currently stands at 9.9% almost a full point higher than 2020.
In Mid-Michigan, one nurse said it was time for her to find something that had a better work life balance.
"I have been a nurse for over 11 years now," said Jessica Knoodle, a registered nurse.
She recently cut back her hours at a local hospital to just two shifts a month.
"It's just a lot to deal with, with everything going on. It's more stressful than it normally is," said Knoodle. "For the past few years, I've been looking for something different."
It not just the night shifts, the mandated overtime, or the pay its pandemic burnout. But Knoodle went into nursing for a reason and she couldn't just give it up.
"That's why I became a nurse, to help people. So, I wanted to find something where I could continue to do that," she said.
She said that it was just time for her to find another avenue to help others heal, landing her where she is now, an Infusion Nurse for Amp Infusions.
"I was a little nervous because I had been there for 11 years and that's all I know as far as my nursing career," said Knoodle. "And so, when this came about, I knew it would be perfect and it's still a way to serve the community and help everybody get healthy."
Dr. Megan Strauchman, the medical director of Amp Infusions, said she's not surprised to see nurses seeking out options with current hospital climates.
