Medical examiner is dismissed by company, so Saginaw County wants out of 10-year pact

SAGINAW COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - The apparent firing of a medical examiner appears to be one of the reasons Saginaw County is ending a contract a private company.

It was a little more than two years ago when we told you the county was outsourcing its medical examiner services.

They signed a ten year contract, but now the county wants out.

The county board's executive committee is recommending to end of the contract with Michigan Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine.

The county is retaining the services of Dr. Russell Bush as medical examiner, who apparently was just fired by the private company.

The company serves as the medical examiner's office for six mid-Michigan counties, including Saginaw County.

But Dr. Bush apparently was fired last week and in part because of his dismissal, Saginaw County County of Board of Commissioners Executive Committee voted last night to recommend ending their relationship with the company.

The full county board is expected to vote on the recommendation next month. The county is expected to retain the services of Dr. Bush as it's medical examiner.

The outsourcing of the medical examiner's office by Saginaw County was heralded as way to make the understaffed office more efficient, save money, and help law enforcement with criminal investigations.

But with Bush out, the county apparently doesn't believe that can happen.

The CEO of the private company, Brian Hart, released a statement on the change of leadership, saying in part, "we believe the change will improve the quality of death investigations, expediency of which bodies are removed from the scene, and timeliness with which death certificates, cremation permits, and autopsy reports are completed."

Hart also says he cannot comment on Dr. Bush's departure, but a new medical examiner has been appointed by the company and even despite the county looking to end the contract, Hart believes the contract will remain in place.

We could not reach Dr. Bush for comment.
